How is everything? I hope that you passed your exams and lernt a lot of English in the first term.

I found this web just by chance and I think it might interest you. It is a good idea, because you can practise your English ( at a very high level!) and donate money for the hungry people in the world. The sponsors will pay for the money. You just play.

Don't worry about the level. What is interesting is that you try and think about the examples proposed. They are very tricky, sometimes!

Pincha aquí para ver la lista de convocados. Las instrucciones para el examen oral son las mismas que en mayo y quedan descritas en la entrada anterior. Veréis que hay personas convocadas pero con casillas en blanco en sus notas; eso significa que el examen escrito correspondiente está aún sin corregir, por lo que pudiera resultar que a pesar de hacer el oral no esté superada la parte escrita del módulo.

para el examen oral del próximo jueves, debéis preparar un tema de cualquier unidad para hablar sobre él durante dos minutos aproximadamente. Luego, podré hacer dos preguntas sobre cualquiera de las otras unidades.

Aún no he corregido la mayoría de los ejercicios, por lo que puede que alguno se presente y luego resulte suspenso en el examen escrito.

Estimados alumnos:
os ofrecemos el calendario de exámenes para septiembre.

Os anunciamos que la dirección de "That's English!" ha enviado una aclaración sobre las instrucciones de funcionamiento del programa en la que se dice que cualquier parte de un examen que esté aprobada, queda aprobada para la recuperación. Esto significa que en septiembre sólo os tendréis que examinar de aquellas partes que estén suspensas.

Quede claro que la tabla de puntuación que hay en el blog tiene carácter informativo y que puede tener errores, por lo que es muy importante que estéis informados de vuestras notas reales para saber qué parte tendréis que hacer en septiembre.

CITA PARA EL EXAMEN ORAL. MAYO 2009

Aquí pueden ver la hora de cita para su examen oral.

NOTA IMPORTANTE

El examen se hará de la siguiente forma:
El alumno preparará DOS TEMAS de los que se incluyen en el módulo correspondiente y, de entre ellos, el profesor le indicará uno. Sobre este tema, el alumno hablará durante unos dos minutos expresando opiniones y ofreciendo datos. Además, el profesor hará una pregunta sobre algún otro tema.

Aquél que no aparezca en la lista por error, por favor póngase en contacto con el tutor.

Algunos alumnos no han escrito en el examen si iban o no a presentarse a esta prueba. Por precaución, los he incluido en la lista. Probablemente, muchos de ellos no deseen presentarse. Si tienen nota de clase, ésa será la que figure en su expediente.

Acabamos de tener noticia de que el miércoles 27 de mayo el I.E.S Néstor Almendros cierra por fiesta local. Por tanto, los exámenes de recuperación programados para esa fecha tendrán que pasar al jueves 28 con el mismo horario. Cuando hicimos la reserva de aulas para los exámenes hace aproximadamente mes y medio nadie nos avisó de tal circunstancia. Lamentamos profundamente las molestias que este aviso tan a corto plazo pueda ocasionar a los afectados pero en ningún caso se nos puede atribuir responsabilidad alguna a los profesores.

Pedimos a todos colaboración en la difusión rápida del mensaje.

Hola a todos:

nos dice la dirección del programa que las recuperaciones de los módulos 1, 2, 4, 5, 7 y 8 serán durante la semana del 25 al 30 de mayo. Los exámenes de los módulos 3, 6 y 9, en la semana del 1 al 5 de junio.

Más adelante especificaremos horas y aulas.

Siendo esto así, la semana de Feria no habrá clase.

Hemos recibido preguntas sobre cómo van las clases. Pues bien, la semana que viene, (lunes 20 y miércoles 22 de abril) hacemos la unidad 4.

Hola a todos:
en la última clase os dije algunos puntos en los que se cometen más errores en las redacciones. Voy a hacer una lista de los más frecuentes (El asterisco indica incorrección gramatical):

El plural de person es people, no persons.
Orden de palabras (word order)(SUJETO+VERBO+COMPLEMENTO+CIRCUNSTANCIAL. Ejemplos:

*We can see in big cities immigrants coming...
*I think is very good multiracial population en vez de I think a multiracial society is very good.

3. Uso de los demostrativos: THIS THAT THESE THOSE: *This cities...
4. Uso de los pronombres: *They live with your (en vez de THEIR) mother.
5. Uso de adjetivos en plural: *Importants problems.../ Bads people.../ Ours bicycles...
6. Uso de minúsculas a principio de oración. Uso de minúsculas en nacionalidades, idiomas, días de la semana y meses del año.
7. Than por That. *I think than...
8. Uso de compuestos de some y any sin concordar con el verbo: *Someone have (por HAS) to go.
9. Es muy común escribir musn't en vez de mustn't.
10. Uso incorrecto de FOR y SINCE como expresiones de tiempo. *Some people have lived here for many years ago.

Bueno, se podría hacer una lista larga, pero esto os servirá de algo, espero.

Congratulations, especialmente a los alumnos de 2º y 3º por haber mejorado considerablemente(en general, claro) la redacción. Se ve que os lo estáis currando.
Os recuerdo que si alguien no está de acuerdo con la nota obtenida en el speaking por pre-evaluación en las sesiones de tutoría, puede presentarse al examen oral mañana lunes 23 a las 17.30. El miércoles se reanudan las clases.

Hola a todos:

en este vínculo podéis ver las notas del oral para el próximo examen del segundo trimestre de los alumnos del grupo de los lunes (tutor, Javier Aragón).

Tened en cuenta que:
- si no aparecéis puede ser porque no tenga suficientes datos de vosotros, porque no tenga foto vuestra o porque haya habido algún error. Podéis enviar un mensaje a mi correo si queréis saber el motivo.
- algunos no aparecéis en mi lista, pero habéis asistido a mis clases. Lo resalto en la lista.
- si aceptáis la nota, no tendréis que asistir al examen oral, pero si queréis subir nota, podéis presentaros. Por favor, anotad en el examen escrito si os vais a presentar al examen oral o no, así podré hacer la lista para citar a los que se examinen.

The sounds /u/ and /u:/

Estimados alumnos:
os transmito lo que he encontrado sobre la pronunciación y la escritura de los sonidos /u/(breve) y /u:/ (larga).
Según el manual A Course in English Phonetics for Spanish Speakers, de D. Finch y H. Ortiz, el sonido /u/ breve se escribe:
1. "u" en sílabas acentuadas, con frecuencia precediendo al sonido /l/, en palabras como:
bull, bullet, bulletin, bully, full, fulfil, pull; bush, cushion, push, pussy, butcher, put, pudding, sugar.
2. Escrito "oo", como en: book, brook, cook, cookie, foot, good, hood, hook, look, nook, rook, shook, soot, stood, took, wood, wool.
3. Escrito "ou", como en could, should, courier, bouquet.
4. Escrito "o" como en bosom, woman, wolf, sorsted, Worcester.
El sonido /u:/ larga, por su parte, se suele escribir:
1. "o", como en do, tomb, swomb, who, whom.
2. "o" + CONSONANTE + "e", como en lose, move, prove, whose.
3. "oe" como en canoe, shoe.
4. "eu" como en adieu, rheumatism, sleuth.
5. Otros: manoeuvre, two.

El examen consistirá en una entrevista de contenido relacionado con las unidades del módulo correspondiente. Además de la correción en el uso de la lengua y el dominio del vocabulario específico se valora en igual medida la pronunciación y la fluidez. Vistos los resultados de los exámenes escritos, el oral no debe suponer gran problema para ninguno de vosotros.

Con idea de no retrasar más de lo necesario el envío de vuestras notas a la administración, consideramos conveniente hacer los exámenes orales lo antes posible. Hola a todos:
os escribimos para enviaros unas sugerencias que esperamos que os sirvan de algo para el examen:

Responde a lo que se te pregunta solamente. No copies un párrafo porque te parezca que en algún sitio de él está la respuesta. Eso te restará puntuación.
Sé escueto en tus respuestas. Evitarás errores innecesarios.
Utiliza sólo el inglés que sabes. No pienses oraciones sintácticamente complicadas en español para pasarlas al inglés: eso te llevará a errores. Utiliza frases cortas y no más complicadas de lo que puedas controlar.
En las redacciones, no escribas más de lo que se te pide.
Cuando hagas una comprensión lectora o auditiva, no contestes según tus conocimientos de un tema, sino según lo que el texto o grabación digan.
En las redacciones (compositions) intenta estructurar el texto en tres partes:

Introducción (muy breve)
Desarrollo: argumentación, tronco de la redacción.
Conclusión: cierre de la redacción y que suele volver a conectar con la introducción.

Mantén siempre el orden de palabras habitual:
SUJETO + VERBO + COMPLEMENTO (I o D) + COMP. CIRCUNSTANCIAL.
Suele ser una buena idea memorizar una serie de fórmulas habituales en las redacciones. Algunas pueden ser: First of all; on the one hand...on the other hand; as a matter of fact; in fact; to summarize o summarizing; as a conclusion; we should mention; it is generally thought that... Es decir, estructura una "redacción tipo" que puedas luego adaptar al tema que te pidan.
Practica algunas de las estructuras que hayas estudiado (voz pasiva, condicionales, algún tiempo verbal, verbos modales, etc ) para usarlas en la redacción.
No utilices contracciones del tipo I'm o They're. Pertenecen al lenguaje coloquial.
Escribe con bolígrafo, nunca el lápiz.

Sólo me queda deciros que me ha encantado estar con vosotros estos dos cursos que llevo ahora en That's English!. Espero poder seguir algunos años más.

A los de tercero os animo a que sigáis con el inglés, en la EOI o donde os parezca. A los de los cursos inferiores, os espero el año que viene para torturaros un poquito más una tarde a la semana.

Para mí ha sido un auténtico placer conoceros a todos.

Los que tenéis notas no muy altas en alguna de las partes, os recomiendo que practiquéis la parte en cuestión. Si necesitáis orientación, aquí estoy.

Si tenéis sugerencias, os agradecería que me las enviáseis.

Hola a todos:
como habréis visto, he puesto etiquetas a los mensajes del blog. Así podéis filtrar lo que queréis ver. Al final de cada mensaje veréis la palabra LABEL, que indica a qué grupo de mensajes la he asignado (JOKES; LESSONS; CURIOUS THINGS...) Cuando encuentres una que sea del grupo NOTICES, pulsa sobre la palabra NOTICES y se verán sólo los mensajes pertenecientes a este grupo.
El mensaje donde aparecen las fechas es del día 5 de abril.

En la última clase, Irene me pidió que colgase la lista de sonidos sordos (voiced) y sonoros (devoiced).
Recordé que la tenía ya puesta en el blog, pero ahora la he puesto en un vínculo aparte, para que se quede ahí y la podáis consultar.
Otra cosa: a veces escribo las aclaraciones en inglés. SI las necesitáis en español, sólo tenéis que poner un comentario.

Otra persona preguntó sobre la estructura Not only... but also. Según la gramática, debe ser una estructura equilibrada, es decir, con la misma clase de palabras en un lado que en otro. Si decimos She not only paints wonderfully tendríamos que continuar con una estructura similar, p.e. but also sings very well. Lo que no he resuelto es si se puede poner esta estructura en negativo, es decir, I not only don't like it but I hate it. Tengo la impresión de que no es correcta, pero seguiré mirando.
Pronto os pondré el contenido de la siguiente clase.

a really hardworking student asked me about the book I recommended to you. It is a reference guide to English called Practical English Usage by Michael Swan (Oxford University Press).
What kind of things can you see in it?
Vocabulary: difference between close and shut; ill and sick; or the use of way.
Grammar: here you will find articles about small things, like the correct use of born or long articles like the one about articles.
You can also find articles about how to write a letter correctly or how to make a quotation.
There is a glossary of Language terminology at the beginning of the manual and a very useful index at the end.
When should use to this book? When we feel that some doubt we have might be frequent among students of English.

There are many more reference books, of course. If you want to browse other material, see Longman, McMillan, Collins, Cambridge or any other specialised editor. You will find lots of examples.

My dear students,
in our last lesson you asked me how to say "el sábado de la semana pasada" o "el sábado de la semana que viene".
If the day we want to refer to is in the present week, then we can say 'this Friday' or 'this Wednesday'. If the day is in the following week, then we normally say 'next Saturday' or 'next Thursday'.
BUT when we mean not next Friday but the Friday following next Friday (SORRY), then we say 'a week on Friday'. And if we are talking about the Monday before last Monday, then we say 'a week last Monday'.
For example: today is Tuesday, March 25. A week today will be April 1. A week tomorrow will be April 2. A week on Friday will be April 4. And, finally, a week last Sunday was March 16.
Not easy, I know. This is not very frequent, but in colloquial speech it is not rare.
There is a very good chart about this topic on page 53, module 5 coursebook.

Hello again,
I am going to answer a few questions you made me in the class.
Someone asked me about the expressions regarding, as regards, as fat as.... They are all quite similar in meaning and level of formality. According to my old friend Michael Swan, "regarding can come at the beginning of a piece of discourse" and "as regards usually announces a change of subject." The only one which is really different is as for, which expresses some kind of dislike as in the following example: My job is the most important; as for the English classes, I don't really care much about them..

The word courtroom means "a room or building in which a court of law meets", which I thin is what I told you.
Fit into means "be part of a bigger whole"
Loathe means detest, feel hatred or dislike.

I highly recommend students with a high level to use a monolingual dictionary. Oxford or Merrian Webster

My dear students,
you asked me a few questions this evening and here are the answers.
COSTUMBRES can be said as CUSTOMS or HABITS. The word COSTUME is only used for clothes, especially on TV, cinema, theatre.
A RETIREMENT PENSION or RETIREMENT PAY is a "pensión de jubilación".

Another question was the difference between SAY and TELL. I will give you some examples:

a. He says he's tired (NOT TELL)
b. He told me she wasn't coming (NOT SAID)
c. They told me to wait (NOT SAID)
d. The movie tells the story of an old lady.

As you can see in (a), SAY can be used WITHOUT indirect object (complemento indirecto). If we want to use an I.O. we must use "to me", "to his friend", etc.
In (b) you see that TELL needs an I.O. It cannot be used without it unless it is used with the meaning of "narrate", as in (d).
TELL is also used when it has the meaning of "order" (c) with an I.O. and a TO -infinitive clause.

were you studying English? Stop for a minute, please. I've got some answers for you.

A very common question students of English make is the order of adjectives. How do we know the right order when we are using more than one adjective before a noun? That is, should I say "long brown hair" or "brown long hair"?

The rules are quite complicated, even for excellent students like you. Basically, we can summarise the rules using the sentence:
A pair of BLACK SPANISH LEATHER RIDING BOOTS, i.e. purpose, material, origin, colour. According to my friend Michael Swan (Practical English Usage, Oxford University Press) the rules for the rest of the adjectives are too difficult to be given. Someone asked me about the use of in- and un-. I looked it up in the Webster’s Encyclopedic Unabridge Dictionary of the English Language and I found this:
‘The prefixes IN- and UN- may both have, among other uses, a negative force. IN- is the form from the classical languages (Greek and Latin) and Is therefore used in learned words or in words derived from those languages: inaccessible, inaccuracy, inadequate, etc.
UN- is native form going back to Old English, used in words of native origin, and sometimes used in combination with words of other origins if these words are in common use: unloving, unmanly, unfeeling, unnecessary, unsafe. Occasionally the prefix UN- is used with a frequently used word in a common meaning, as in unsanitary (not clean), and IN- with the same word in a more technical sense: insanitary (likely to cause disease). In England the prefix IN- is more commonly used than in the United States.’
Did you understand… or is it a bit difficult? Well, we could summarise it by saying that IN- is more frequent with Latin or Greek words and technical words. UN- is used with words not coming from classical languages (German words, mainly). It is more frequent in the US than in the UK.

How did the first lesson go? Fine, I hope.
I know you have lots of material to study - probably more than you can use. Still, you may find some extra material useful.
If you write common errors english on a searcher (Google, Altavista or whichever you like) you will get a number of sites that can help you avoid errors.
www.isabelperez.com is the site of a teacher from Málaga who has done a wonderful job for students of English. You can find all kinds of exercises and all kinds of levels there.
I particularly like the site of Oxford's course Headway (http://www.oup.com/elt/global/products/headway/). Choose your level and practise with interesting, well oriented exercises.

As you know, That's English! website has a list of links that are very good, too.

¿Qué podéis preparar para cada sesión presencial?
En los objetivos que aparecen en la primera página de cada unidad, podéis ver qué funciones comunicativas se practican. Así, para la próxima sesión, habrá que ver:

Módulo 2: Pedir información sobre trenes; la hora; leer horarios de trenes.
Módulo 5: Expresar sentimientos; describir a alguien personal y físicamente; uso de adjetivos
Módulo 8: Consumismo: gastos innecesarios; reclamar por una compra; solicitar ayuda para comunicarse.

Otros puntos que podéis repasar son las conversaciones y los ejercicios de pronunciación. Son convenientes porque siempre hay preguntas sobre ellos en los exámenes.

También es muy útil para los alumnos de primer curso el resumen (SUMMARY) que viene en la penúltima página de cada unidad.

En la próxima sesión, voy a hacer las siguientes preguntas:
M2: Questions about the times of your daily activities. Read times on a clock. Conversations: buying train tickets and others.
M5: Describing yourselves and others; features of your ideal partner (group work). Describing pictures from the coursebook. Making an advert for a contact section (Fun Q)
M8: Thinking about shopping: what kind of articles do you usually buy? Do you usually buy unnecessary items? Are you a compulsive shopper? // Thinking about hypothetical situations: what would you do if you found € 1,000,000? What would you do if Brad Pitt or Penelope Cruz offered you a romantic weekend in Bahamas? etc.
